Helping to make the world a safer place

Albagaia Ltd specialises in the environmentally-sound destruction of micro-organisms and harmful organic compounds. The company has developed highly-innovative photocatalytic technology processes designed to provide safe, high-quality outputs. Its products can be used to treat industrial and chemical waste, ballast water and sewage. Other applications include the removal of contaminants from domestic water supplies, swimming pools and spas and the delivery of improved air quality in both domestic and industrial spaces.

Albagaia's founders, former technologists at Dounreay nuclear power station, originally developed the technology to neutralise chemical and biological weapons using just water, a catalyst and a light source. The company designed a small portable system that could take the solution to the problem and eliminate transport risks. Lack of traction in the arms disposal market, however, led the company to consider diversifying into new areas. Since 2005, the company has focused on developing its water treatment capability and also offers consulting on the environmental and engineering aspects of waste treatments.

Working with GlobalScots

In 2003, Scottish Enterprise's High Growth Start-up Unit awarded Albagaia two years of seed funding support and introduced GlobalScot, Tom Thomson, to the company. He became its Chairman in 2005 and since then has been working proactively on Alabagaia's behalf, providing hands-on governance and advice on corporate strategy.

"The partnership between a young company like Albagaia and Scottish Enterprise, which has provided guidance, financial support and access to the GlobalScot network, has been absolutely invaluable in allowing us to go forward and build up a strong management team."
