Scott Lipinski
Fashion Council Germany e.V CEO / Managing Director
Berlin, Germany
GlobalScot, 2 years
GlobalScot and CEO of Fashion Council Germany, Scott Lipinski talks about fostering connections between Scottish and German fashion brands and his future plans with the GlobalScot community.
Can you describe your path towards becoming CEO of Fashion Council Germany, and what your role encompasses?
I started my career as a consultant at Accenture. After that I held positions at renowned German fashion houses such as Wunderkind, Michalsky and lala Berlin.
Since 2017, I’ve been the CEO of Fashion Council Germany. Here, I represent the best fashion designed and made in Germany. Our goal is to further establish German fashion as a cultural and economic asset, while generating greater recognition for the industry nationally and internationally.
We’re doing this through political lobbying, establishing networks and creating platforms for interdisciplinary exchange. As one of the founders of the European Fashion Alliance, I’m also committed to creating an international network within the European fashion industry.
What would you say is Scotland’s contribution to the fashion industry?
Scotland possesses several unique qualities that make it stand out in the fashion world. One key advantage is our rich tradition of craft and skills, which have been honed over generations and passed down for centuries.
Think about where Scottish fabrics are used – in some of the most well-known collections worldwide. Scottish artisans and manufacturers take immense pride in their expertise, whether it’s textiles, knitwear or traditional techniques like tartan weaving.
Many Scottish fashion brands embrace their cultural roots and draw inspiration from Scotland's landscapes, folklore and traditions. Infusing heritage into their designs gives Scottish brands a distinct identity.
How do you think Scottish businesses are seen by the wider world?
Generally, Scottish businesses are highly admired and respected. They’re recognised for their unique blend of tradition and innovation, combining heritage and a deep-rooted love for their country with a forward-thinking approach to business. Many Scottish brands draw inspiration on Scotland's rich cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship and natural landscapes, infusing their products with a distinctly Scottish identity.
Scottish businesses have contributed to sectors such as energy and technology, confirming Scotland as a centre of excellence and innovation that’s attracted interest and respect globally.
How did you first hear about GlobalScot?
I first became aware of GlobalScot through Scottish Development International (SDI), where I was connecting with various professionals and experts in the Scottish business community. Given my Scottish heritage and strong ties to my home country, the GlobalScot community’s mission deeply resonated with me.
I’ve always believed in the power of networks. They foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing and business opportunities. When GlobalScot approached me, I saw an incredible opportunity to support the Scottish fashion industry with my expertise and experience.
I was motivated to join the GlobalScot community and contribute to the growth and international recognition of Scottish fashion, while also making connections with like-minded professionals and industry leaders.
I firmly believe in the potential of Scottish creativity, craftsmanship and innovation within the fashion sector, and I’m excited to be part of a network that facilitates the exchange of ideas, resources and expertise.
What do you think is the most valuable thing GlobalScot can offer Scottish companies?
The power of networking! Don’t underestimate that power.
The GlobalScot community provides a platform for Scottish businesses to connect with experienced professionals, industry experts and fellow entrepreneurs from various sectors. Through GlobalScot, Scottish companies have access to a vast pool of knowledge, expertise and resources that can be invaluable for their growth and success.
The more Scottish brands actively engage with the GlobalScot community, the more potential they unlock.
What more can the GlobalScot community do to help Scottish businesses?
The community could provide market exploration trips for its members. These trips would allow Scottish businesses to gain first-hand insights into international markets, identify potential partners and explore expansion opportunities. We do that within Fashion Council Germany, and it’s been very successful.
Additionally, organising matchmaking sessions specifically tailored to the industry would be beneficial. These targeted sessions could facilitate connections between Scottish businesses and retailers, distributors, investors and industry experts.
Tell us about the Scottish Market Insights events you’ve been involved in recently.
Fashion Council Germany has a well-established partnership with The Prince’s Foundation that has been running fruitfully for many years.
Together, we hold several events at Dumfries House focusing on supporting young emerging talent. For Fashion Zukunft, a conference held there every Autumn, we bring together German and British pupils, students and young entrepreneurs. While our Future Club for German C-level executives is a place for discussing the future of fashion, it also takes place in an intimate and inspirational environment.
Next year we want to include Scottish executives even more than we did this year.
What's next for your relationship with the GlobalScot network?
We would love to present Scottish heritage to German brands in a ‘tour through Scotland’.
We’d give German businesses an immersive experience in Scotland's rich cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship and the unique elements that make Scottish brands stand out.
By creating direct interactions and curated occasions, we can encourage collaboration and partnerships between German and Scottish companies. Our tour would be a catalyst for building stronger connections and opening up new avenues for growth and innovation.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Jump in the cold water – you’ll soon learn to swim! And the more you swim, the warmer the water gets.”
This reminds me to embrace challenges and step out of my comfort zone. By taking risks and diving into unknown territory, I’ve discovered new skills, expanded my knowledge and grown both personally and professionally.
It encourages me to embrace change and challenges, while continuously pushing myself to grow. Each new endeavour brings valuable lessons and rewards.
